I've been in a coma for about four days.

[The walk from the door of her cabin to the door of the engine room is very short, but lately she's started to feel terribly agoraphobic on the walk between those rooms, as if the world might suddenly open up completely and leave her stranded in a huge, inescapable void.

If that's unpleasant then the walk up to the library is a nightmare, but her insomnia isn't going away and God knows she needs something to fill the hours. Still, she walks the programming and linguistics sections in a bit of a daze, eyeing the shelves and reading spines without taking much in.]

Are you programming an energy-to-matter conversion to create temporary tangible objects, or a mental-stimulus system to trick the brain into fully perceiving objects that aren't truly there?

The latter. I already have a fully functioning photonic force field program to render holograms in the real world.

These were informative when I was doing similar research. Perhaps they'll help you as well. This one was particularly useful for cross-species functionality and creating adaptive programming to integrate with a variety of types of neural pathways. If you intended it for use beyond humans.

Oh - thank you, Coordinator. [She accepts the books, tucking one under her arm.] It's just to pass the time, really. I've been working on it since I was Rinzler's Warden, it was a...therapeutic environment, for him, given his provenance. Over time it's become a bit of a hobby and the more complex it gets the more complications I run into.

Ah. Yes, I was researching it while Agent Kay was CLU's warden, for similar reasons, although I was using my knowledge of the Gallifreyan Matrix as a baseline. Under other circumstances, I would share my notes, but my project didn't go as planned and afterwards I had all the notes destroyed.

[She nods her understanding. When things go wrong on the Barge, they go wrong; she's enough personal experience of that to know to leave well alone.]

Primarily just my long-term research and engineering project. I'm trying to find a way to get temporal technology to work properly here, but the Barge renders chronons erratic. Finding a way to control them safely has proved to be difficult.

I did some research a couple of years ago, on using a time lock I developed as a protection against the floods. The simulations I ran all ended badly. Catastrophically, in some cases.

Yes, I haven't been able to account for the erratic chronon movements yet. But I'm sure given enough time I can make it work. [Bit of a weak Time Lord joke in there.]

You might want to consider using the CTS as a testing ground, if it gets that far. It seems to be the closest thing we have to a completely sealed environment.

Hm. That's not a bad idea. I'm no where near testing phase yet, but when I am I plan to take all reasonable precautions possible. Failed time experiments can so get very messy. [His last failure resulted in an inhabited planet aging to death. He doesn't want to do that again.]

[She nods. Manipulating the Rift and summoning a gigantic demonic entity hadn't been Torchwood's finest hour; nor had her extremely non-simulated time lock misadventure on the Barge.]

Still, if all else fails you could blame it on the Admiral, he seems to be above that sort of thing anyway.

Half the floods could be science experiments gone awry as it is, if not for the Admiral's anouncements. And maybe even then.

So he's possibly not only a poor driver but an incompetent experimenter. I do sometimes wonder if we're just rats in a proverbial maze of the Admiral's making.
