There's a new filter on the communicators. 'Special Access'. Does anyone know what purpose it's meant to serve? [Because she's not adding anyone to it until she can benefit from someone else's experimentation,]

I don't know that anyone else is going to say this, so - belatedly, I can't thank you enough for your help and for taking the risks involved. We wouldn't have made it out safely without you.

If you're planning to ask the Admiral for a key to the engine room then I'd be fine with sharing my schematics and working out a shift pattern. [And due to her unhealthy territoriality of the engine room she can't really bring herself to sound any more amenable than that.]

[Switching onto voice for this one. She sounds warm but tired ,and her voice is a little thick, which is only to be expected when she's been sleeping on and off for almost twenty hours.]

I feel like I could stand to be in bed for another day or so.

[ There's a little laugh, a remarkably warm chuckle there on the line; when Megamind's 'off stage' he's oddly normal sounding. Less shrill; he smooths into an even baritone. ]

Me? I'm fine. I only sleep a few hours a day, but-- creative frenzies like that tend to be draining. I have a dog as an alarm clock now too, so-- If I haven't been in bed, I've been with Angus on deck... and headed back to bed shortly.

No warnings from the engine room though? Nothing's popped, leaked, cracked, or exploded? This is what they call the 'all clear', yes?

[ There is a jaw-cracking yawn and some shuffling. ]

Looking forward to normality? [ He can't, but surely, she can. ]

Such as it is, yes. Though I have to say I've never minded the odd crisis. Keeps us on our toes.

Oh, it was exhilarating! [ ...which he pronounces hex-eel-a-rating .] I do some of my best work under pressure. I mean I love the long drawn out plotting... but sometimes working under the moment of I must have that thing right now, it makes for a certain fantastic energy that allows for bursts of clarity and brilliance!

So, yeah, I don't mind a little madness here and there. It's sort of in the job description. I'm just used to being the one making it, not, you know...

[ Fixing it it. That's a hero thing. ]

I know. [There's something teasing in her tone.] You did a very good job nonetheless. I won't tell anyone if you don't want me to.

Oh, I'll tell everyone how awesome I am in my own way, I assure you.

[ He just won't attach any good motives to it. ]

It was a fun thing, though! Most stimulation I've had since I got on the barge.

I feel like I'll be disappointing you when I say things like that are few and far between.

I think I can manage to contain my disappointment. [ Oh well. ] Besides if they happened once a week they'd lose their impact.

[Her voice is a little brittle, but she's forcing herself to get the words said.]

Whoa, what? [ There's some sudden shuffling and a bit of twisting in the bed because this demands more immediate attention. He's clicking on his lights, and Angus, who has been getting away with sleeping on the bed while Megamind is exhausted, whines in protest about being moved. ]

[ He's also turning on his video feed, peering with his brow furrowed and his mouth tight. ]

No. No second thoughts. I don't really-- second guess myself. But if you are... Well, I'd rather know now than get told how awful I am in the middle of the street in the rain.

[ Way to not even cover half of Roxanne's damage, okay. But he'll get to that if he has to. He knows... ultimately, Roxanne dumped him for perfectly good reasons and he deserved it. It's why he didn't pull a Hal to get her back. ]

[She turns on video as well - she's in her room, sitting at one of the workstations, still looking a bit tired and tousled but better than she did a day or two ago.]

I'm not. I promise. And I've got...no plans to do that.

[ He pauses, and then scratches the back of his neck. ] You're not going to get in trouble, are you? I mean, I encourage badness at all times but...

[ Not if it's going to really wreck their lives on the boat. ]

[She laughs a little.]

No. No, I don't think so. It'd be completely inappropriate if I was your Warden, naturally, but as is...no. It won't be a problem.

Thankfully, Kay is not my type. Anyone who can grow more hair than I can on their face is right out.

Well, that works out nicely for me.

[ He smirks, just a little, though it gentles. ]

I suppose I should-- ask about ground rules. I mean. I don't-- really...

Just assume I've never gone out with a woman at this point, because the last time I did my holographic disguise generator failed mid-dinner and next thing I know I'm wearing champagne and being told just how repulsive I am.

So, uh. Yeah. Ground rules. What are yours?

This...isn't something I've ever been asked before.

[If Tosh had ground rules they'd all boil down to 'please treat me like I'm a sentient being who feels pain and not just a temporary convenience', but, you know. She can't say that.]

What sort of thing did you have in mind?

[ In his heart of hearts, he knew he brought it on himself. He was thinking about telling her-- trying to work toward it... ]

[ In the end, it didn't matter. He got his answer. ]

No? Why-- not? I mean, I-- thought that this sort of thing was...expected? Boundaries and stuff.

I'm not very good at conducting relationships how I'm expected to. If I'd been asked to set boundaries in the past, it would have been things like 'please don't read my mind instead of asking me things' or 'let's not talk about the fact you have to go back into cryogenic storage at the end of the day'.

Mind reading just sounds rude. [ He's not even gonna ask about the cryogenics, okay. ]

Well, look at this way. I'm teachable. Trainable. Very smart. I just...

I'm probably never going to be ideal. Or particular good.

[ So if she can take him warts and all, like he wants -- then he can prove Roxanne and Minion wrong and maybe be a little happier before he eventually gets booted off the boat to his death. ]

[ This may in fact be a terrible plan in the making. ]

[Oh Megamind. If only you knew about the utter dick she spent years pining over. You're a sweetheart by comparison.]

Ideal is unrealistic, and I'm not, either. So, I can deal with that if you can.

[ He has no idea that he is a step up. Honestly, he might be a little bit sad. But for now, he's smiling. ]

Yeah, well, I don't look for perfection anywhere. That's [ a good guy thing ] unrealistic, definitely.

So, uhm.

Dinner. Sometime. Somewhere?

[ He's trying so hard not to think about Roxanne right now, but as she was just invoked earlier, so she might be in that big brain of his looking on disapprovingly. But it's been like, two months! He's allowed to move on, right? ]

[ Not like she was ever going to care. ]

We've got limited options for where. But - yes, definitely, dinner sometime.

Depends on-- how comfortable you are in public. [ With him. Specifically. Because face it, he knows he's a freak. He won't be too put out if she doesn't want to be seen in public with him. ]
